Purpose
To award fellowship to students for one academic year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia in approved language programs.
Focus -
Foreign languages.
Qualifications -
Applicants must be pursuing a professional, business, technical or academic career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, or Khmer); must have a college undergraduate degree; must be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined in the grant guidelines; minimum requirement is three years of study of the language at college level or equivalent fluency; must be able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant; must be US citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

To Apply
Applicant must submit a list of all classes/training they have taken in their chosen language of study; a list of any academic and professional honors they have been awarded; a copy in PDF format of their curriculum vitae or resume; a personal essay, three to four pages in length, double-spaced, in PDF format detailing applicant's career path and goals, which discusses their academic, professional or business background, prior study of the language and involvement with the Asian country, and how the language will be used to achieve their career objectives; two professional contacts to submit letters of recommendation on applicant's behalf; official transcripts from all college-level institutions from which applicant received a degree or is currently attending. Official electronic transcripts, sent by the issuing institution's electronic transcript; if a college or university does not issue official electronic transcripts, official paper transcripts will be accepted.
